A New Season at Oak Hart Farm
Dear Friends of Oak Hart Farm,
Many of you have walked alongside this farm for years, and we are deeply grateful for the relationships that have grown here.
For nearly nineteen years, it has been one of the greatest joys of our lives to grow food for this community and welcome you to Oak Hart Farm. Over the years many of you have become more than customers — you have become part of the rhythm and community of this blessed land.
This farm carries the history of our family and the generations who cared for it before us, and it has always been our hope to steward it well.
After much reflection and many conversations, we have made the difficult decision to scale back Oak Hart Farm’s operations. For the foreseeable future, we will be open one day per week, on Thursdays only, and our first open day for the season will be Thursday, May 14.
Over the past year, several circumstances have come together that require us to reassess what is truly sustainable for our lives and for the farm.
Like many families, we have experienced some health matters that require more attention and balance than before. At the same time, we are navigating ongoing estate matters that require significant time and attention.
We are also in a season of life where being present for our children and grandchildren matters deeply to us, and we want to make space for those responsibilities as well.
This winter also brought some unexpected challenges on the farm. During the cold weather we lost one of our hoophouses, which set back part of our growing capacity and has taken time and resources to rebuild.
There is also construction currently occurring on the farm. Between heavy equipment, winter conditions, and the recent rains, the driveway has become difficult to navigate at times, making access to the farm more challenging during this period.
In addition, the economics of operating a full grocery-style farm store have changed significantly. Rising costs, minimum purchasing requirements, and shrinking margins have made it increasingly difficult to sustain the store in the way we have for many years.
For this season, our focus will be on what we do best — growing food. We will continue to grow a diverse variety of vegetables here at Oak Hart Farm, along with our weekly homemade preparations using the vegetables we grow.
We also look forward to continuing our support of local food banks and sharing more of the seasonal harvest grown here with our community.
For those of you who added CSA credit after last year’s initial signup period, we will absolutely honor those balances this season. However, we will not be taking new CSA signups for this year.
Farming has always taught us that seasons change, and sometimes the path forward requires us to reshape how we tend the work we love — while staying true to the land and the community that make it meaningful. Our love for this land and for this community remains as strong as ever. Oak Hart Farm is not ending — it is simply entering a new season of care, balance, and intention.
Oak Hart Farm will be open Thursdays
beginning May 14 from 10:00 am until 6:00 pmWe look forward to welcoming you back to the farm, sharing what we grow, and continuing the connections that have made this place so special for nearly two decades with your continued support and friendship.
With Gratitude, Shawna and the Oak Hart Farm Family
